What Our Interns Have to Say

“This internship allowed me to express my own opinions and ideas in different areas of concern. I gained knowledge of how to handle certain situations. For example, some kiddos have a hard time transitioning to a different activity, and I gained insight into handling those situations. I learned that we should allow children to express themselves in unique ways. This experience will help me when I encounter different children and youth in hospital settings and be able to use communicative language where they understand me and vice versa.” —Ashley

“One interaction with youth from the summer that I will remember is when, during an art activity, a participant became super excited about an activity and invited me to work on a drawing with them. They seemed to be having such a good time and were dancing around, eager to express themselves through art and dance, which was just such a sweet and fun moment to be a part of.” —Katya

“This internship has allowed me to gain insight and knowledge in working with children that have disabilities. The internship showed me how to interact with children with neurodiverse abilities and things that can be done to make them comfortable and feel safe.” —Mabel

“Participating in programs has shown me the effects of a safe and free environment and like-minded community on children and teens, particularly those with disabilities. It made me more inclined to take the initiative in creating a space like that. Since the internship, I have been wondering about what it would be like to be a teacher in some way.” —Molly

RACIAL EQUITY & INCLUSION

Extreme Kids & Crew believes that every child has the right to play and make art as it holds meaning to them, that every family has the right to accurate information and support, and that every employee has the right to a workplace that embraces a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Disability and race are entrenched ideas that have long been used as division and social oppression tools. We work to reverse some of the psychic tolls; this has been caused by making space for loving communities bound by the experience of disability. We work in communities with the world's most prominent African American and immigrant populations, and we recognize that the experience of disability is more complex and dangerous for our Black and Brown members. Through a combination of vision and action, we work to create more equity and understanding of intersectionality within our community and the general population.
